The hill resort derives its name from the Five-Pandav caves; Pachmarhi derives its name from these caves, which as the legend goes, once provide sanctuary to the Five-Pandav brothers. These caves are now protected monuments. There are five ancient dwellings on the sandstone rock in a low hill.
